Problem to Solve
Create an intriguing visual of self-expression through photography only. The only creative limitation was that no photos could be cut. Only whole photos could be used.
Creative SOLUTION
Alone with My Thoughts is a creative visual expression on the idea of self-reflection. Each character representing a different character of myself. The “true self” is center as the the other versions of myself. I wanted to inflict curiosity on the viewer. The title says “alone” but there is clearly 10 characters shown. This would cause this viewer to try to solve the riddle of the title. The delightful reward for the viewer would be the discovery that the 9 figures not facing the viewer are versions of the character facing the viewer. Even though we see 10 characters there is in fact only 1. This project had to be carefully mapped out and executed with precision due to the limitation put on the limitation put on this assignment of not being able to cut the photos. I had to first settle with a layout of the characters and map out the camera to account for the physical offset of the other characters so that the final product of a single photo would not need to be cut in the final assembly of photos.
I took a couple hundred photos and carefully selected the perfect photos to capture the meaning, atmosphere, and mood of my intended vision. I submitted this piece into the 2019 Counter Space contest and won Best in Class and Judges Choice in the photography category.
